By James E. Rogers, President and
Chief Executive Officer, Cinergy Corp.

"A business is a member of the community and must take an active role in the community. The most successful companies, regardless of their size, are major players in the community.

"The arts are good for business. They:

  • Help a company attract the quality employees it needs to do business.
  • Foster creative thinking in and out of the workplace thinking outside the box.
  • Increase understanding among individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Enhance educational achievement and enable many children to become more prepared to enter the workforce.
  • Boost economic development and enhance the quality of life in a company's operating community.
  • Demonstrate good corporate citizenship and enhance a company's image and reputation.

"In a 1992 study of nearly 800 arts organizations in 33 communities in 22 states conducted by Americans for the Arts, it was found that the arts generate:

  • $36.8 billion in their communities.
  • More than $25.3 billion in personal income.
  • $790 million in revenue for local governments.
  • $1.2 billion in revenue for state governments.
  • $3.4 billion in federal income tax revenue."
