Now It's Bring Your Art to Work Day

Most people don't get to show off their artistic side at work. But this October, the Business Committee for the Arts (BCA) wants to bring art and art appreciation into the workplace with a new nationwide program called art@work.

BCA developed the program to help employers recognize and celebrate the creativity of their employees. During October, which also happens to be National Arts and Humanities Month, participating employers will designate an art activities day and recognize employees who want to share their creative talents and interests. Some program activities suggested by BCA include:

  • Workplace exhibitions of art created, performed or enjoyed by employees.
  • Opportunities for employees to present poetry, book and play readings, and/or musical performances.
  • Receptions for employees, families and friends to showcase art@work activities.
  • Discussion groups on the art displayed and presented in the workplace.

Last year, BCA organized an art@work pilot program for four employers: Cinergy Corp. in Cincinnati, FORBES Inc. in New York, and Meredith Corp. and Principal Financial Group, both in Des Moines, Iowa. Christopher FORBES, vice chairman of FORBES Inc., says the pilot program was an overwhelming success and that his company will participate again this year.

"At FORBES, we have found that the arts make for a more stimulating and creative work environment," he says. "By participating in art@work and recognizing the creativity of our employees, we are showing our commitment to them and their interests, which, in turn, boosts morale and team spirit."
