"In this era, everything moves so fast. We have voice mail, computers, and
e-mail. Everything is so impersonal. The arts help us get in touch with our
humanity."
– James E. Rogers, Vice Chairman, President and CEO
Objectives
To heighten its presence and name recognition in its operating communities, to
increase public interest and encourage participation in the arts, and to
recognize students with exceptional artistic talents.
Program
- To identify, encourage and reward high school students who show promise in
the visual and performing arts, The Cinergy Foundation, the philanthropic arm of
Cinergy Corp., established The Overture Awards.
- High schools in three regions throughout Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky nominate
top students in six artistic disciplines who participate in regional
competitions held in local colleges and universities. Six finalists are chosen
from each region to perform in a juried competition held in the Aronoff Center
for the Arts, Cincinnati. Winners are announced the following evening during a
formal awards banquet, which is attended by many members of the arts, business,
and education communities.
- Cinergy collaborated with other businesses, not-for-profit organizations,
local colleges and universities to create committees of business, arts and
education leaders who developed and administered various aspects of the program.
- The Overture Academy, an additional component of The Overture Awards,
invites every regional competitor to attend a free, weeklong summer program of
extensive training in his or her discipline. The week culminates with community
performances and exhibitions.
Results
Cinergy Corp. has heightened its presence in the community through the extensive
media coverage and networking opportunities resulting from The Overture
Awards. Additionally, many students who participated in the program have
enrolled in colleges and universities to continue training. Additionally, The
Overture Awards has become the largest multi-discipline arts scholarship
program of its kind in the country.
