Industry: Semiconductor Manufacturer
Company Size: Large (annual revenues of greater than $250 million)
"As a high-tech company, we value innovation and creativity. Through our
support of the arts, we communicate and encourage these values, build the
community and demonstrate our commitment to making a positive social
contribution."
– James C. Morgan, Chairman and CEO
Objectives
To invest in the vitality and diversity of the community, to provide a creative
work environment, and to provide employees, their families and friends with
opportunities to become more engaged with the arts.
Process
- To increase awareness of new artists and new ideas, Applied Materials created a
series of multi-venue art exhibitions called Art@Applied. Exhibitions
have profiled Northern Japanese artists, Israeli life, and the contributions of
Silicon Valley artists to the development of the area’s life and culture.
- The company also celebrates diverse cultures by sponsoring events
such as the Latino Film Festival, underwriting the Latino Playwright's
initiative, and by supporting Cinequest in its effort to bring additional
films about the life and culture of the Pacific Rim to the area.
- Additionally, Applied Materials provides grants to arts education programs such
as TheatreWorks for Schools, which offers in-school theater workshops to
enhance learning, and Art Studio in the Park, which provides visual arts
experiences to elementary schoolchildren during the summer camp program of the
San Jose Museum of Art.
- To engage employees and their families with the arts, the company offered free
admission for the children of employees to Hands on the Arts, an
interactive festival organized by the Arts Council Silicon Valley and the City
of Sunnyvale. During the month of May, the company also underwrites free
admission for each employee and up to five of their guests to six
area museums.
Results
By creating programs that focus on the arts and creativity, Applied Materials
exposes its employees to new ideas, builds appreciation for diversity, and gives
employees, their families and friends increased opportunities to participate in
the arts. The company’s investments in the arts also help arts organizations
build and expand their audiences and increase revenues.
