Objectives
To reduce violence by providing gang-affected youth with an opportunity to
present their views of life in a nonviolent way and to offer the community an
insight into the issues of these youth.
Process
- The Resort at the Mountain is part of a coalition of sponsors that have
joined with the Oregon Commission of Children and Families to form a
public/private partnership to support Straight Shooting, a 12-week
mentoring program that engages at-risk youth in photography.
- Straight Shooting partners gang-affected youth, ages 14 to 22 years,
with professional photographers one-on-one. The mentor approach provides
youngsters with positive role models, and helps them build self-esteem. Students
meet regularly with their mentors in classrooms and labs at the Portland
Community College, as well as on the streets of Portland to complete photography
assignments.
- At the end of the 12-week program, the students’ photographs are exhibited
in the Portland Art Museum. A special opening reception is held in honor of the
students to celebrate the opening of the exhibition. The exhibition also travels
to community centers, schools and public buildings throughout Oregon.
- The Resort helps to underwrite the exhibition in the Portland Art Museum,
the exhibition catalogue and marketing materials. The photographers volunteer
their time, and supplies and lab facilities are provided by Portland
Community
College.
Results
The Resort at The Mountain has garnered media attention, helped reduce gang
violence, and broadened community awareness of the issues surrounding gangs.
And, by hosting the exhibition, the Portland Art Museum is broadening its
audience and further serving community needs.
